Tenerife South Airport

Situated in the southern region of Tenerife in the Canary Islands, Tenerife South Airport, also known as Aeropuerto de Tenerife Sur or Reina Sofía Airport, serves as a crucial gateway for both international and domestic travellers. Officially inaugurated on 6 November 1978 by Queen Sofía of Spain, the airport was constructed to accommodate the island’s growing tourist trade, following the tragic events at nearby Tenerife North Airport in March 1977, when the deadliest aviation disaster in history occurred. With its modern infrastructure, the airport initially catered for charter flights, rapidly expanding services to handle larger volumes in the 1980s and 1990s as the Canary Islands’ popularity surged. In addition to its primary role as a tourist hub, the airport has played a pivotal part in humanitarian relief efforts, such as during the 2010 eruption of the Icelandic volcano Eyjafjallajökull, when it became a diversionary hub for disrupted European air traffic. Today, Tenerife South Airport proudly accommodates over 10 million passengers annually, linking the island with Europe, Africa, and beyond, and stands as a testament to the strategic transformation of Tenerife into a premier international travel destination.
