Plaza del Ayuntamiento

Situated in the heart of La Orotava, the Plaza del Ayuntamiento stands as a prominent civic and historical landmark in Tenerife. Established in the mid-19th century following the liberal administrative reforms in Spain, the square has long served as the epicentre of municipal life. The imposing Town Hall, which was completed in 1871 on the site of a former Dominican convent destroyed during the disentailment of church properties (Desamortización) in 1836, anchors the plaza. Surrounded by elegant bourgeois mansions and emblematic Canary Island architecture, the square has hosted numerous significant events, including the annual Corpus Christi festival, renowned since 1847 for its elaborate sand and flower carpets meticulously crafted by local artisans. Over the decades, Plaza del Ayuntamiento has witnessed political rallies, royal visits, and public concerts, making it an enduring symbol of La Orotava’s civic pride and historical continuity. Today, it remains a hub for both official ceremonies and community gatherings, reflecting the layered heritage and cultural vibrancy of the town.
