Plaza de la Libertad

Over time, Plaza de la Libertad has undergone a series of transformations that have led to a growth in its walks and gardens, as well as a constant change of names: Plaza de Santa Ana, de la Constitución, de la República, del General Franco and of freedom.

It was first Plaza de Santa Ana and was attached to its church. After the volcano, a street was drawn between the two and it was transformed into a square. This happened in 1821. In 1912 remodeling work was carried out in the square, directed by don Francisco and don Ramón Arocha. This design and directed the works of the music kiosk, following a model that he brought from Mexico and that he wanted to reproduce in his hometown, achieving his purposes before the acceptance of his countrymen. It was then when the trees were improved and new gardens were designed. Its stone benches are still preserved in different corners of the municipality; the dirt floor was still a problem, especially when there was a walk with music event, but it must be clear that the walls that surrounded it disappeared. The square continued to maintain its 70 centimeters height and its four steps. In 1970, the Garachiquense colony based in Venezuela gave the municipality a bronze statue of Simón Bolívar, the work of the Garachiquense sculptor Juan Jaén. He was placed in an environment that had been drawn and directed by local artist Pascual González Regalado.

Already in our days, between 1990 and 1991, the square underwent modifications again. It gained a new pavement in which the shields of the Bolivarian countries have been embedded, the gardens were remodeled, part of the fountain installed behind the statue was reformed and part of the balustrade was also removed, which has been maintained in a wide area, for security reasons. The square now has a modernity that it did not have before, which is a contrast with the surroundings.
