Plaza Andres de Caceres

Another place in Icod de los Vinos that you must see is the Plaza de Andrés de Lorenzo Cáceres. It’s in the main square of the historic town center and serves as a social and civic meeting place for all icodenses, locals of Icod de los Vinos. The plaza, which dates back to the 16th century, has been expanded into what you can see if you visit now, including a neoclassical balustrade and flowers from all over the world, such as beautiful Indian laurels. What stands out the most about this attraction are the fountains and the Church of San Marcos, the patron saint of the town, built in the sixteenth century. The stones used in the construction of the vault and columns were actually brought from the island of La Gomera. A few euros are charged for visiting the church, and this is justified by the fact that the world’s largest silver cross is located in the church, which is almost two and a half meters high and weighs nearly fifty kilograms. I wouldn’t call this cross a wonder of the world, but at the same time, being a tourist myself, I was not at all sorry sparing few euros to see this cross and the extremely richly decorated altar with sculptures resembling an iconostasis. The church of San Marcos is also notable for the fact that it was built in six years, but in modern times it took seven years to repaint and whitewash it.
