Museo Casa de El Capitán

Museo de Historia Casa de El Capitán, or the Captain’s House, is a traditional Canarian style building. The courtyard, around which the bedrooms, kitchen, cellar, barn and rooms for agricultural tools were located. The house was built in the early 19th century and was the home of Don Miguel Alfonso Martínez. He was the mayor of San Miguel and captain of the national militia in the early 19th century. The chronicles tell that El Capitán was a figure who had a great contribution to the development of the municipality of San Miguel, and the man was appreciated and respected by all his countrymen. The legendary Captain’s house was hit by fire in 1978. So this house remained in ruins until the end of the nineties, when the San Miguel de Abona City Council decided to restore the building and turn it into a museum. In addition, the house has a library on the theme of the Canary Islands and a wine cellar with an old wine press. A special mention should be made of the Center for Traditional Ceramics. Various pottery courses are held there and, of course, the pottery center has a kiln where clay figures are made. Visitors to the center can buy these ceramic products.
