Montaña la Sahorra
Back to all places
Montaña la Sahorra, or Mount Palmar was used as an earth quarry until the eighties of the last century. It has been a big headache for the village of Las Cuevas for decades now. Because, as you can see, many of the hillsides were left very steep, in some cases almost vertical, due to uncontrolled and unplanned mining, which has caused significant soil instability. There have been several landslides over the years, the most alarming occurred in April 2006, when the municipality of Buenavista had to evacuate several families living at the foot of the hillsides as the mountain threatened to swallow their houses. Rumor has it that sometime in the future there are plans to reconstruct the mountain and fill it with soil again until it becomes safe.
