Mercado de Nuestra Señora de África

The African market, or Mercado de Nuestra Senora de Africa, is the largest in Tenerife, looks imposing and has neat stalls. It was built in 1943 when much of Europe was ravaged by bombings. The construction of this market was driven by two primary reasons. Firstly, the capital’s main market, Recova Vieja, had become overcrowded and inadequate to meet the growing demands of the city. Secondly, the existing market lacked proper refrigeration, causing significant challenges for merchants, particularly the fishmongers who were greatly affected. During that time, Senjor Santes, the economic manager of the islands, made a remarkable discovery. He found that technology designed for civilian purposes, including cooling devices, was available at significantly reduced prices due to the wartime focus on other priorities. This realization led to the initiation of a project, and architect Jose Marrero Regalado was commissioned to design the new market building in a neo-colonial style. Drawing inspiration from his experience as a designer of churches, Regalado incorporated a magnificent tower into the market’s structure, adding a sacred and awe-inspiring element to the overall impression of the building.

The development of this grand market, along with the necessary equipment, amounted to 3.7 million pesetas, which, taking into account inflation and other factors, is roughly equivalent to the same amount in euros today. Considering the scale and significance of this market, it is truly an incredible value. In 1944, the market was consecrated as the sanctuary of merchants and bestowed with the name Nuestra Señora de África, after the Virgin of Africa, who is also the patron saint of Ceuta. Ceuta, a remnant of the Spanish colonial empire, is one of the two enclaves of the Kingdom of Spain and a free city situated in Africa.

As you explore the African Market, you will be captivated by its imposing presence and the meticulous arrangement of its stalls. The market offers a wide range of goods, including fresh produce, local crafts, clothing, and much more. Allow yourself to immerse in the vibrant atmosphere, interact with friendly merchants, and discover the rich cultural heritage of Tenerife.
