Iglesia Mayor de San Marcos

Situated prominently on Plaza Andrés de Cáceres, the Iglesia Mayor de San Marcos is the principal church of Icod de los Vinos and a true emblem of the region’s religious heritage. The church’s origins date back to the early 16th century, with its construction officially commencing in 1500, shortly after the Spanish conquest of Tenerife in 1496. Over the following decades, the church underwent various extensions and renovations, reflecting changing architectural styles from Gothic and Mudéjar to later Baroque influences, most notably in its elaborate altarpieces and sculpted woodwork. The Iglesia Mayor de San Marcos stands on land historically associated with Guanche gatherings and ceremonies, highlighting the complex cultural overlay resulting from Spanish colonisation. The church is dedicated to Saint Mark the Evangelist, patron saint of Icod de los Vinos, and his statue, carved in the 16th century, is still carried in solemn processions, particularly during the feast of Saint Mark every 25th April. Within its walls, visitors find valuable works of Canarian religious art, including intricate silverwork from the 17th and 18th centuries, a remarkable Flemish triptych, and paintings attributed to the school of Juan de Miranda. The bell tower, completed in the 18th century after an earthquake damaged earlier structures, provides sweeping views over the historic town. Throughout its history, the Iglesia has played a pivotal role as a centre of social life, hosting masses, festivals, and civic gatherings, even during times of piracy raids or volcanic threats from the nearby Teide volcano. It remains today a place not only of worship but also of historical reflection—a testament to the town’s enduring spirit across centuries.
