ex-convento de San Julian
Back to all places
In the street of Esteban de Ponte, the convent of the hermits of San Agustín was built, known by the name of San Julián, whose foundation is due to the captain Don Julián Moreno Ctiño, around 1621. This convent, which was also a College, enjoyed great prestige for its artistic wealth. Large one-story building, with a simple and pleasant architecture, where the masonry elements that decorate its façade stand out, especially the framed doors and windows. With a double floor, it had a central courtyard with stone shaft columns. The chapel, with elegant lines, preserved an excellent sculptural repertoire, partially rescued and which today is housed in different religious sites in the Villa, such as the image of El Señor de la Humildad y Paciencia, from the 17th century.
On March 19, 1697, the festival of San José, a fatal fire destroyed a good part of its architecture, as well as a hundred adjoining houses. Rebuilt in the following century, it went up in flames again in 1825, and in an attempt to recover its past, the Mendizábal confiscation truncated that project.
