Cueva Del Hermano Pedro
Back to all places
Cave of Santo Hermano Pedro is located next to the Reina Sofía Airport and is dedicated to Pedro de San José Betancur, better known as Santo Hermano Pedro, who took refuge there during his childhood to rest while taking care of his family’s herds. Inside the cave you can see a wooden sculpture of the saint located next to the offerings made by the faithful and the pieces of paper on which they write their requests. Pedro de San José Betancur was born in Tenerife but carried out his religious and evangelizing work in Guatemala, where he stood out for his treatment of the sick and the poor. This cave is considered one of the most important pilgrimage points on the island and the Canary Islands, and attracts more than 300000 visitors a year. It is in this cave that the Saint would stop to rest with his flock in winter to regain strength and walk the road to his small town in the heights of Vilaflor. In addition, the cave was also used by Brother Pedro as a place of prayer and even as a hiding place to protect himself from some pirate raid, which were abundant on the coasts of the Canary Islands at that time. The cave has a relic of the Saint, specifically a part of a rib. The so-called "Hermano Pedro Path" ends in this cave, which is a pastoral route that the Saint traveled to move with his flock throughout the Chasna region. This route starts from Vilaflor to the Cueva del Santo. Currently during the festivity of Santo Hermano Pedro in April, hundreds of pilgrims travel this route that has a great religious-historical interest.
