Convento de San Francisco

Old Convent of San Francisco is an architectural complex that had its beginnings in 1524, when Don Cristóbal de Ponte ceded land to the Seraphic Order together with the hermitage on his property dedicated to Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles, which with time would be transformed into the convent chapel. It is a double-story building, with two large cloisters built with teak wood, in which the right feet, the gargoyles and the open balconies produce an aesthetic enjoyment. The wide stone staircase that is covered with a rich coffered ceiling of Mudejar roots stands out. The convent, exclaustrated at the time of Minister Mendizabal in 19th century, is today the House of Culture. The Public Library and the Municipal Archive are located in its rooms, it has two rooms that house permanent exhibitions: Canary Islands, volcanoes in the Ocean; Exhibit of old photographs of Garachico and a Collection of Shells, Fossils, Minerals and Rocks. Taking advantage of the beauty of the building and its surroundings, the City Council currently rents it for banquets and different events. It can be visited in the morning and afternoon, from Monday to Saturday.
