Cave of Achbinico
Back to all places
If you’re lucky, the old church dug into the ocean shore, hidden a few hundred meters south of the new basilica, is also open, and you can see another version of the Virgin of Candelaria, which unfortunately bears little resemblance to either the first or the second Madonna. According to some authors, Achbinico is a toponymal that means here is the spill. The cave was orginally used to milk goats and for some kind of worship. Guanches brought the primitive carving of the Virgin of Candelaria to this cave. After Tenerife’s conquest on February the 2nd 1497, the first celebration or Candlemas was held in this cave.
