Castillo de Paso Alto
Back to all placesNestled along the coastline of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Castillo de Paso Alto stands as a testament to the island’s enduring military history. Originally constructed in 1584 under the orders of King Philip II, this fortress was designed to defend the city against persistent pirate attacks and foreign invasions, a reflection of Tenerife’s strategic importance during the age of Atlantic exploration. The castle played a pivotal role during the Battle of Santa Cruz de Tenerife in July 1797, notably contributing to the successful defence against the British fleet led by Admiral Horatio Nelson, who famously lost his arm during the campaign. Over the centuries, Castillo de Paso Alto underwent several renovations, particularly in the 17th and 18th centuries, adapting to advancements in military technology. Although partially dismantled in the 20th century due to urban development, remaining sections still evoke the era when the fort’s cannons safeguarded the city’s harbour, inviting visitors to imagine the dramatic events once played out along its ancient ramparts.
