Casa Del Corregidor
Back to all placesThis distinguished residence, Casa Del Corregidor, stands as a prime example of 16th-century Canarian civic architecture, located at the heart of San Cristóbal de La Laguna, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1999. Erected in 1545, Casa Del Corregidor originally served as the official home and administrative headquarters of the corregidor, the king’s representative and chief magistrate during the era of Spanish rule in the Canary Islands. Its striking façade, notable for its red volcanic stonework and elegant Renaissance elements, reflects the wealth and urban sophistication of La Laguna during its Golden Age. Over the centuries, the building has borne witness to significant historical events, including the consolidation of municipal governance and the flourishing of transatlantic trade routes passing through Tenerife. In the 18th century, it was briefly used by the military during the period of British attacks upon the islands, notably around the time of Admiral Nelson’s failed assault on Santa Cruz in 1797. Following multiple renovations to preserve its heritage, Casa Del Corregidor today houses the city council’s offices and continues to be a symbol of civil authority and cultural identity in La Laguna, inviting visitors to discover the rich legacy woven into its historic walls.
